Black Quill

Issue 37
Spring 2005, AS XXXIX
Shire of Ravensweir
Quesnel, BC

From the Deputy Senschale

HL Cerridwen is a mite busy these days, so I just have a few though.

It has been such a severe abd grueling winter fo many of us here. Looking back over the past year, I realize how mugh we've gone through. We've had 4 divorces, 5 layoffs and diverse other troubles and strife and now this unbearable sorrow. Our hearts go out to Lady Lasilana. To bear such cruelty and grief... know that we love you, dearest, and selfishly beg you to return to us when you can.
It's a wonder that we're functional at all. It's my opinion that the only reason for our continued existence as a shire is the noble intent and good works of our shire members.

I'd like to thank Lord Erin, Milord Serrin, and Lady Davalyn for all their hard work on the Doomsday Book. I know we are under a bit of a crunch and I really appreciate the enthusiasm and great work you're doing.

As Arts & Sciences Champion - RE - Golden Heart
I'm sure there will be many wonderful submissions to our championship this year. I look foreward to the judging.

In sorrow and hope,
HL Sigrid Arden

Flight of the Matchmaker

It is traditionally believed that a young girl is able to tell what sort of man she will marry bu the first bird she see in flight on this day. Each bird has an association woth a profession or type of character but yellow birds in general are though to be luck if siin in flight or perched nearby on this day. The following mystical birds are traditionally identified with St. Valentines Day:

Blackbird: Clergyman or priest, spiritual
Robin Redbreast: Sailor, nautical
Goldfinch (any yellow bird): A rich man
Sparrow: Farmer, agricultural, of the country
Bluebird: A happy man
Crossbill: An argumentitive man
Dove: A good man
Woodpecker: No husband

Yellow-bellied White Tipped Blue Crested Sapsucker: Black leather clad pirate captain - most likely prone to dramatic bursts, sci-fi and fantasy fetishes, and hides a latent kilt affinity.

Twelfth Night

by William Shakespeare
A sampling - Act 1, Scene 1

Character - Orsino, Duke of Illyria

If music be the good food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it; that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken and so die.--
That strain again;--it had a dying fall;
O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet south,
That breathes upon a bank of violets,
Stealing and giving odour,--Rnough;no more;
'Tis not so sweet now as it was before.
O spirit of love, how quick and fresh art thou!
That, notwithstanding thy capacity
Receiveth as the sea, nought enters there,
Of what valadity and pitch soever,
But falls into abatement and low price
Even in a minute! so full of shapes is fancy,
That it alone is high-fantastical.

Notes from the Chronicler's Corner

Greeting and Salutations to all the members of our Shire, from this humble Chronicler. What a blustery and unpredictable season we've had - but I'm sure we'll reap the rewards of surviving this spring/summer!

I'd like to offer a hearty congratulations and great thanks to our new and/or transfered officers - Lord Erinn O'Keely our new Master of Blades, Serrin Bislev our new Herlad, and to Lady Lasilana Danica Trifunovs MacGowan our new Chirurgeon!

Also - I would like to take this time to re-iterate as announcement made at an earlier Shire meeting. Newsletters are easy and fun to put together, but I would like more submissions to create them with - otherwise this would simply be a publication by myself rather a compiled vision of the members of our fair Shire as it deserves to be. Henceforth there will be at minimum 2 newsletter pubished per annum, unless I should recieve 4 or more submissions by members other than myself, at which point a newsletter will be created. to display these articles for all to enjoy! As usual, submissions can be anything your heart and mind desires - poetry, prose, articles, factoids, thoughs on the SCA and all it emcompasses - anything appropriate is greatly appreciated! Anything you deem worthy can be sent to me at any time via email at: foxfire_50@hotmail.com.

Thanks to everyone and keep up the fantastic dedication to out wonderful shire!

Yours in sanguine service,
Cordeliya Morrighan Bloodwynn Maelwedd

TWELVE
LAWS OF
CUPID
- From a treatise written by a cleric named Andreas Capellanus - at the behest of Countess Marie de Champagne, daughter of Duchess Eleanor of Aquitane
According to Andreas, enlisting in the ranks of Cupid's army and serving in his court of Love is to be praised. In fulfilling the dictates of love, a true lover learns to be modest, graceful, discrete, attentive, well-groomed, generous, honest, faithful, and worthy of praise of all men and women. Thus love is shown to be morally improving. To achieve this exalted condition, Andreas gives us the twelve laws that Cupid, King of Love, would have every lover obey. Theses are:
